2023 Volkswagen T-Roc in-depth Walkaround The Volkswagen T-Roc offers a 1498 cc petrol engine paired with an automatic transmission. With a mileage of 18.4 kmpl, the T-Roc provides efficient performance. This 5-seater SUV boasts a 4-cylinder configuration and has a length of 4234mm, a width of 1819mm, and a wheelbase of 2590mm. When it comes to features, the T-Roc doesn't disappoint. It includes an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a 6-speaker sound system, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. The top-end model of the Volkswagen T-Roc, the 1.5 TSI, prioritizes safety. It has been awarded a 5-star rating by Euro NCAP and is equipped with 6 airbags (driver, front passenger, 2 curtains, driver-side, front passenger-side), seat belt warning, child lock, anchor points for a child seat, overspeed warning, speed sensing door lock, anti-theft engine immobilizer, middle rear three-point seatbelt, flashing emergency brake light, and central locking. Did the best camper just get even better? This is the new California based on the current T7 Multivan. Admittedly it is still a ‘concept’, but if you base the functional stuff off what’s already available in the MPV Multivan, there’s are plenty of options. Engines are likely to be a 148bhp, 2.0-litre diesel that’s probably going to be the most popular choice, but also the option of 1.5 and 2.0-litre petrols and a 1.4-litre, 215bhp plug-in hybrid. The Multivan brings with it a bit more dynamic ability than the Caravelle it replaces, as well as more refinement, a whole host of more advanced driver assistance systems and other gadgets. Still recognisably a California, but based on the newer and more advanced platform, with all the good stuff baked in. There’s no pricing yet, and we’ve not driven it, but this looks like an absolute belter. Given the current pricing of this type of VW product, there’s likely to be a starting price of around £70k and rising from there. But that’s cheap for a house, right? The bigger brother of the ID.4 is available as crossover badged ID.6 X and as a slightly rowdier, more SUV-like Crozz. Its wheelbase was extended by 300mm to make room for a third row of seats, but those who travel seven-up should only bring hand luggage. After all, its boot volume varies between hopeless and acceptable depending on the chosen cabin configuration. At 4888mm, the neo-MPV with the pseudo-off-road livery is 10mm longer than the full-size Touareg. Marginally taller and wider than the ID.4, it tips the scales at a substantial 2280kg. In contrast to the soon-to-be-discontinued Sharan and both Multivan generations, the people movers built in Foshan and Anting must do without practical rear sliding doors. Access to seat row number three is accordingly compromised, and the same goes for the rear legroom, headroom and shoulder room as well as for the contourless, thinly padded seats. Customers keen on jumping the dim-sum queue by outpacing their hungry rivals on the way to the best restaurant in town should opt for the top-of-the-line AWD model that boasts a combined output of 228kW. While the front wheels are powered by a 76kW motor, the 152kW rear drivetrain is a carryover from the ID.3. The entry-level variant has a 134kW unit wedged between its hind legs. There are two different underfloor battery packs on offer; the smaller outfit is rated at a humble 58kWh, the brawnier energy source good for 77kWh. According to the rather optimistic Chinese NEDC norm, users can expect a range of 436 and 588km respectively. The all-wheel drive ID.6 will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.6sec but the top speed of both models is limited to 160km/h. The average consumption works out at a miserly 18.2kWh/100km, peak torque is a useful 310Nm, the maximum charge power is a merely adequate 125kW. It's an okay car, the ID.6 X, but dynamically it does not play in the same league as the Tesla Model 3 Long Range or the Hyundai Ioniq 5, both of which command similar prices. Charge power and charging time, voltage, ergonomics, recuperation and the portfolio strategy that puts the ID.4, ID.5 and ID.6 in the same small basket are among the points we take issue with. Who better to respond to our concerns than the brand‘s new R&D chief Thomas Ulbrich? "The ID range has been very well received, but it is perfectly clear that we must continue to improve the product and extend the services that come with it," he says. "Whereas we are going to stick with the 400V system over the entire lifecycle, the maximum charge power will, before long, increase to 170kW. "VW just started the first round of no-cost over-the-air updates, and we are soon going to unlock additional functions at cost. Rather than chasing Tesla for performance, our emphasis is on practicality and user-friendliness.” Like its brethren, the ID.6 is not as involving to drive as its chief rivals. In terms of handling prowess and entertainment value, the top-of-the-line model is at best a dozen confettis and half a paper streamer more rewarding than the base ID.4. The brand´s defensive recuperation philosophy is again a major bone of contention. Comments the CTO: “Customer feedback suggests that some users would like us to extend the one-pedal feel until the vehicle comes to a full stop. Other clients are in turn interested to dial in the coasting mode at random. "Both requests warrant attention but bear in mind that it takes about two years to write, implement and certify the corresponding software. As far as hardware changes are concerned – the touch sliders and the light pod received some criticism – we would not take action before the mid-cycle update." Introducing the all-new Volkswagen ID Buzz! It’s a family-friendly people carrier that’s out to buck the trend of MPVs being ugly and uncool. The question is, has it been successful? Well for starters, let’s check out the design, where it’s clear to see that the ID Buzz easily stands out among the crowd! Not only does it look great in this two-tone paint job, but there are a number of exterior features that help enhance its look and feel even more. Around the back, you’ve got wrap-around tail lights and a full-length light bar along with a mini spoiler. There are big creases all along the side, and the wrap-around headlights up top mirror what you see around the back. There’s also a super cool grille design, coupled with the largest VW badge in its entire range! The good looks continue on the inside, too. There’s the option to have the same two-tone design as found outside, and there are a number of cool little features on the dash and in the door pockets that really lift the look and feel. The dash has a big infotainment screen, although the system isn’t that great. On the flip side, though, the interior is packed full with loads of different storage areas. When it comes to performance, the ID Buzz comes with a single electric motor driving the rear wheels to deliver 204hp. It comes with a 77kWh battery pack which is good for a claimed range of 258 miles. A dual-motor edition is on the way, too, which will be good for 299hp. Decisive for the low drag coefficient is the flowing basic shape of the body with its greenhouse, which is strongly drawn in towards the rear. Kathleen Brooks bought her first Beetle in December 1966 in Riverside, Calif.—a red 1967 model she quickly named Annie. Ever since, Annie has been Kathleen’s daily transportation, racking up more than 350,000 miles over 51 years, or enough to circle the globe 14 times, and Kathleen, now 73, still drives Annie to work. After hearing about Kathleen and Annie’s special relationship last year, Volkswagen’s North American Region undertook a unusual project—offering to restore Annie at the North American home of the Beetle at the Puebla, Mexico, factory. Over the past 11 months, a team of some 60 Volkswagen employees and trainees reworked Annie back to factory-quality specs, with several custom touches that celebrate Kathleen’s dedication. This week, Kathleen and Annie were reunited, and Kathleen met key members of the Volkswagen team that led the restoration. We often hear stories of dedicated Volkswagen owners, but there was something special about Kathleen and Annie that we felt we needed to honor, said Derrick Hatami, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Volkswagen of America, Inc. The original Beetle launched our business in the United States. This isn’t just a Beetle, it’s a member of her family, and after all the time our employees have spent with this special vehicle, we feel Annie is a part of our family as well. Brooks works with breast-cancer patients and survivors to provide comfort and cosmetic care during treatment and recovery. A three-time breast cancer survivor herself, Brooks says for over five decades Annie was a constant conversation starter with Beetle fans and owners, but also always there for me. I’ve said many times she and I are so much alike because she’s old, she’s faded, she’s dinged, she’s dented, she’s rusted, but you know what? She keeps running, says Brooks with a laugh. And as long as I take as good care of her as I can, she’s going to continue to run. Even with Brooks’ best efforts, Annie had several needs when her restoration began in Puebla early this year, from a floor pan rusted through to the ground in spots to suspension, transmission and electrical challenges. Over 11 months, the Puebla team replaced roughly 40 percent of Annie’s parts and restored 357 original pieces, down to recreating the stickers that Brooks had added to the body and windows over the years. To properly restore her faded red paint, the team matched the original shade from the inside of the glovebox, sandblasted the body, repaired with a mix of period-correct and updated parts, and then reassembled. Several parts of the vehicle were restored with better than their original factory parts, from the disc brakes that were an upgrade on later Beetles produced in Mexico to the AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo designed to mimic the look and feel of original Beetle radios. The wiring was completely redone; the transmission rebuilt and suspension upgraded. The engine was completely disassembled, cleaned, updated and rebuilt. Even the seats received a special touch, with Kathleen and Annie embroidered in a classic VW font over new leather. And to tie the car to the modern era, the car’s toolkit and jack was painted in deep sea teal metallic, the color of the 2018 Beetle Coast edition. The goal, says project manager and mechatronics engineer Augusto Zamudio, was not to create a museum quality Beetle, but to bring Annie back to a state where Kathleen could drive and enjoy her for many more years to come. When Annie arrived, our team members quickly understood the connection Kathleen had with her car and embraced this project wholeheartedly, said Steffen Reiche, CEO of Volkswagen of Mexico. Restoring this car posed a number of challenges, but also provided a demonstration of the dedication we put into every Volkswagen we build. When Brooks parted with Annie, she wrote a heartfelt note to the Puebla team members thanking them for their efforts and asking them to take care of her special car. Zamudio says the feeling is mutual – and the team wrote Brooks back a note of their own.

This is the all-new Volkswagen Amarok! Now there’s one thing about this new Amarok that really sets it apart from its predecessor... Underneath the skin, it’s pretty much a Ford Ranger! VW has just gone to work on it, adding some new body panels and updating some of the interior, but otherwise, it’s pretty much just a Ranger! But either way, let’s see if this is one pick-up that you need to consider. Starting with the design, it’s clear from the rear that the Amarok brought in new body panels over the Ranger as you have a big Amarok wording embossed into the tailgate. We also have the Pan Americana trim on this edition, so we get some smart metal bars that sit along the edge of the load bed. Along the side, there are running boards, and upfront, the Pan Americana trim means we have a matte dark grey effect running through the bottom of the grille, which really adds to the imposing look of this pick-up. Step inside and the familiarity with the Ranger becomes clear. The centre console and infotainment set-up are identical, with a big vertical screen in the centre of the dash. All-in-all the cabin is pretty well made, with soft-touch materials throughout the cabin. The infotainment system has been taken across from the Ranger, which is a good thing! Although, despite the Amarok coming with some physical buttons, you still have the use the touchscreen to control the climate. When it comes to engine choices, there are three options. The entry-level is a 2-litre turbo diesel that can deliver 170hp and comes with a manual gearbox. Next up is a 2-litre turbo diesel that comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, with the ability to deliver 205hp. But the range-topper is a 3-litre V6 turbo diesel, which also comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox, along with the ability to produce 240hp. The price of the new Amarok starts from around £41,000, rising all the way up to around £57,000 for this top-of-the-range model. But is it worth it? Or should you go for a Hill or Ranger instead? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!
