Thermarest NeoAir XLite VS NeoAir NXT Comparison AFTER 13 YEARS with the 'Old' Version! & BONUS TIP I have used the 'Thermarest NeoAir XLite' since January 2010, not long after they first started appearing on the shelves. I used the original version through it's many iterations to current form. This has been some 13 years of wild camping in all seasons of the year - literally, hundreds of camps using the standard NeoAir XLite. When Thermarest released their 'NXT' version, I was keen to see if the changes they had made were in fact noticeable and added value to what was already a great mat. As someone who has extensively use the 'old' version, it is a resounding YES from me! The new 'NXT' is thicker, quieter and warmer; with an R value of 4.5. The standard XLite was warm enough on my winter camps, I sleep in clothes anyway - but I always brought along a cheap foam / foil backed mat for extra warmth - not required anymore with the NXT and I can ditch the extra bulk. The version I opted for was the NXT 'MAX' - in short, this means a rectangular version as opposed to the standard 'mummy' shape. As you will see from the video, the extra bulk and weight is negligible but the benefits are many. As a side sleeper, no more arms or shoulders on the cold tent floor in winter. Finally, I believe that by purchasing a Thermarest, you are 'investing' in a Thermarest; that being that if your sleeping mat develops a fault (not through improper use), Thermarest will warrant it for life - send it back to them and they will repair or replace at their discretion. Are they expensive ? Yes - but not when you consider the value of this superb warranty - it is literally a sleeping mat for life - if I divide the cost of my NeoAir XLite over 13 years - pretty ace value to be fair and I'm more than happy to recommend this mat. Just a little gear hack my girlfriend and I discovered when trying to find a better solution to pumping up the very voluminous Thermarest Neoair Xlite. It turns out that you can in fact use the Nemo Vortex Pump Sack (a slightly lighter and much cheaper) solution!

We found that the NeoAir XLite has a higher R-Value (3.2 vs the 1.3 for the outdoorsman lab), but if you've got a good sleeping bag, the difference didn't mean much for us.
