I get asked a lot about what hardware I recommend for homelabs and home servers. It's a very difficult question since it depends on what exactly you want to get out of your setup. But, whatever you choose, I'm starting a new series where I'll setup all of the commonly requested home server software in a single box. Since I want to try this on both used and new hardware, here's a low cost NAS you can buy brand-new and run your own software on it! A few basics of this guy: - Terramaster F2-223 - F2 means 2-slot cube form factor, -2 is dual core, 23 is the 'new' series (at least when this video was produced) - Intel Celeron N4505 dual core - Dual DDR4 sodimm slots, comes with 1x 4G stick and one easily accessible empty slot. I added an 8G stick to bring it up to 12G so I can do virtualization - Dual Intel I225-v3 2.5G NICs For more information such as cpu info, pci, ... see the blog post: 🤍 A few upsides: - They are pretty cheap for the HW you get new - Mix of SATA and NVMe storage options, for bulk storage and high speed storage - x86 processor so it can run Linux based OSes well - Intel I225 2.5Gbe NIC is considered 'good' compared to Realtek chipsets, and widely compatible across OSes such as Linux and BSD A few downsides: - The included software seems to want to install itself on your drive as the boot disk, but I was unable to get it to do so in a short amount of time so I gave up and installed Proxmox (which I was planning on doing anyway) - The internal USB seems to perpetually change some BIOS/UEFI settings back to default, removing it fixed all of the issues I had getting it to boot Proxmox properly - The second RAM stick is harder to get to, although I don't think you realistically need more than 12G of RAM to go with this much CPU power. If you have just made the decision to switch from public cloud services (Google Dive, DropBox, etc) towards your own private NAS server, then chances are you might have been a little surprised by the price tag of the average NAS. Because subscription services are months subscription-based that are spread over years and years, requiring little-to-no extra physical hardware on the client side (you!), a fully deployed NAS server with HDDs and/or SSDs can seem quite the investment up from for a small home or business user. Thankfully, the NAS market has evolved quite alot over it's 20+ years of commercial availability, resulting in scaled solutions/brands that do a reasonable job of fulfilling their portfolio with NAS drives that allow you to make more targeted purchases (i.e you pay for the things you want to use and save on the bits you don't). Now, in the world of private servers, the big brand that everyone recommends as your entry point into NAS is Synology. This brand has an extensive portfolio of solutions, trades more on it's 1st party software than hardware and despite its 'generally higher than most pricetag' is considered the top brand in NAS. However, that higher price point and prioritising software over hardware has always been something of an annoyance to some of the more DiY or technically-versed buyers. These are users that want to adapt a solution themselves, want value for money and don't want to be locked in too much to a single ecosystem. Into this debate, arrives Terramaster. With less than 10 big players and less than 5 of those being real marketing recognized, choosing a NAS solution is actually quite restricted. In that small paddock of NAS brands, the one that is by FAR the best hardware value (as in, getting the most for your money in terms of hardware) is Terramaster. A brand that has evolved incredibly rapidly in the personal home/office server market in the last 7-8 years. Although not as well established as bigger brands with decades in the server industry (such as Synology and QNAP), in the short time they have been in the NAS market, they have produced a range of solutions that sneak up remarkably close in hardware/software to those bigger brands, whilst sometimes arriving close to half the price for the same architecture. Their latest series is the x23 series (arriving in 2, 4, 9 and 12-Bay desktop solutions so far, at the time of writing) and today I want to review their F4-423 4-Bay NAS. Going up against the likes of the Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 and QNAP TS-464 NAS (released around a month on either side of the F4-423), as well as competing with Synology’s DS920+ right now, the F4-423 has some steep competition. Nevertheless, with its pricetag already £100-180 less (depending on where you shop) the F4-423 already seemingly has the high ground in terms of affordability, but what about software, quality and overall performance?
