Welcome to Birmingham. The heart of the Midlands of the UK, with a metropolitan population 4.3million, this is a big city with big city problems. Birmingham has also recently declared itself bankrupt, the local council having developed an unsustainable deficit. This will no doubt lead to further local service cuts to an already strained infrastructure, leading the poorest to be hit the hardest. Those at the lowest level of the poverty heirarchy, the homeless, suffer from exposure to violent crime and harsh conditions living on the dangerous streets. Substance abuse and assault are an every day occurance for those that live on the streets in the city. Birmingham in England’s West Midlands region is a major city with a history in the industrial revolution. The city is less popular among tourists though is conveniently located between Oxford and Liverpool as a stopover. We start our Birmingham city tour at the St. Martin in the Bull Ring and near the futuristic Selfridges department store. We take a quick stroll over the Bullring Open Market before we enter the city centre. Next we walk around China Town and also check out Grand Central. After the shopping area we head a bit out of central Birmingham and eventually return to the St. Philip's Cathedral in the city centre. There is more to see so we head to Victoria Square with the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery and Town Hall there. It is getting late. It's time to return to where we started walking on the New Street which is also a major hotel and shopping area. We end our evening tour about where we started with a nice view of the cathedral St. Martin in the Bull Ring. Birmingham Bankrupt News | UK's Second Largest City Birmingham Declares Itself Bankrupt | N18V Birmingham, the second-biggest city in Britain, declared itself bankrupt on Tuesday, sending shockwaves through the city's governance. The Labour-run administration representing the UK's second-largest city issued a 114 notice, putting a stop to all but essential spending and becoming the latest in a string of councils to plunge into financial distress. A Section 114 notice is issued by a council when it believes its income will not be able to meet spending. Thurrock, Croydon, Slough, and Northamptonshire have all issued Section 114 notices in recent years. One of the key reasons behind the city going bankrupt is the equal pay claim. The City Council doesn't have enough money to pay 760 million pounds ($955 million) in equal pay claims it owes to female government employees who were paid less than men in the past. American “XL Bully” dogs are set to be banned after the latest attack saw an out-of-control pet go on the rampage in Birmingham. Suella Braverman, the Home Secretary, announced that she had commissioned “urgent advice” on outlawing the breed after she highlighted the “appalling” attack on an 11-year-old girl during the incident. West Midlands Police were investigating after the girl and two men who intervened were injured in the attack in the Bordesley Green area on Saturday. “This is appalling. The American XL Bully is a clear and lethal danger to our communities, particularly to children,” Ms Braverman wrote on social media. “We can’t go on like this. A teenager has been jailed for five-and-a-half years after he pointed a handgun at a man on a busy street in Birmingham city centre. 19-year-old Nikye Thomas took the gun from the man before pointing it and then running away. No shots were fired. Police pursued Thomas before apprehending him in Birmingham New Street station.
