‘If the Archbishop of York doesn’t like the Christian religion, there are others he can turn to.’ Peter Hitchens says the Archbishop of York is wrong to suggest that the Lord’s prayer is ‘problematic’ due to the use of the term, ‘Our Father’. #uknews #archbishopofcanterbury Keep up to date with the latest news at 🤍 Twitter: 🤍 Facebook: 🤍 Download the GB News app! Here we look at the address of Stephen Cottrell at the Church of England Synod in July of 2023. He speaks negatively about the phrase "Our Father" in the Lord's prayer. Here we see another example of the Church of England pushing for gender-neutral language for God.
Sky News host James Macpherson says “progressive priests” are more concerned about their social credit score than about biblical truth after the Anglican Archbishop of York slammed the Lord’s Prayer for problematic usage of ‘Our Father’.
On the third day of Archbishop Stephen's visit to Rome, accompanied by Mrs Rebecca Cottrell and his chaplain The Reverend Dr Jenny Wright, he shared an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis.

The Archbishop of York has suggested that offering prayers of blessings for those in same-sex relationships is just a "development of doctrine." In response to a question by Christian Concern's Ben John, asking what measures were in place if Bishops fail to believe, teach or uphold doctrine, the Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, said: "It is the job of Bishops, as well as the church itself to explore what is sometimes called the development of doctrine. To which, in my own thinking, I tend to follow Newman on this... within the acorn there is as it were potentially the whole of the oak tree, so doctrine doesn't change but it does develop." He then goes on to suggest that the Church of England offering prayers of blessing to those in same-sex relationships is just a "development of doctrine", saying: "And on some of those issues, you may be aware, I'm sure this wasn't in your mind when you asked the question, you may be aware there are some issues at the moment facing the church which are precisely in that area, where at the moment the Bishops have said 'no, no, doctrine doesn't change', but there is a discussion about the development of doctrine." In closing, the Archbishop of York, smugly suggests that if Ben wants to do further reading on the subject he should read the New Testament. Ben John has been reading the New Testament and recently explained how Labour MP Chris Bryant was wrong when he claimed Jesus and Paul never spoke about sexual immorality: 🤍 Church Society's Dr Ros Clarke has also explained why the Church of England shouldn't bless what God detests: 🤍
During General Synod, Andrea Williams proposed an amendment inserting the words “as revealed in the Bible and taught by the church” to a motion calling for politicians to “prioritise the common good of all people.” Andrea spoke on the need for the Bible to inform our understanding of the common good. She also proposed another amendment to the motion calling for the protection of life, the promotion of marriage and family and the maintaining of Christian freedoms. Both amendments were rejected by Synod, with the Archbishop of York John Sentamu replying: “If you’re going to serve the whole community please don’t limit our language…The Word became flesh and sadly we are now making it Word, Word and Word again. Resist the amendments.”
In my recent trip to England I had the privilege of being part of a tour with the Archbishop of York. It was full on for two days and included 10 separate events - 11 if you count the curry we enjoyed together! There was no quicker way to learn about the Church of England's strategy for discipleship, mission and growth than listening to multiple addresses by Archbishop Stephen Cottrell. He gave an analysis of the state of the Anglican Church in England and a stirring challenge to respond with our best prayers and our best efforts.
Bishop Stephen Geoffrey Cottrell, took up the historic Braganza Crozier – his staff of office – in a short ceremony at York Minster, following his Confirmation of Election as the 98th Archbishop of York. Archbishop Elect Stephen’s Confirmation of Election service was broadcast entirely via video conference due to the Covid-19 restrictions. Following the service, Archbishop Stephen made a short walk of pilgrimage to the shrine of St Margaret Clitherow. Here, he was welcomed by the Rt Revd Terence Drainey, Roman Catholic Bishop of Middlesbrough. After a few moments of prayer, Archbishop Stephen then proceeded to the crypt of York Minster where he prayed at the tomb of St William of York. Archbishop Stephen then moved to the Quire of York Minster where he took up his Crozier in front of a small, socially distanced gathering drawn from his immediate staff representing the Archbishop’s Leadership Team, Bishopthorpe Palace and York Minster.

The Archbishop of York has revealed how he once “healed” the late Queen’s Bentley motorcar after it refused to start during his visit to the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Speaking in the Lords, the Most Rev Stephen Cottrell recounted how the monarch’s vehicle eventually fired up after he performed “a large sign of the cross” over it. “I see the Queen out the corner of my eye looking rather stony faced at this point and I think perhaps I’ve over-stepped the mark. Anyway, the driver tries the car again and – praise the Lord – the car started." (26 Jan 2015) The Church of England consecrated its first female bishop on Monday. The Reverend Libby Lane became the eighth Bishop of Stockport in a service at York Minster. Her consecration comes after the church ended a long and divisive dispute by voting last year to allow women to serve as bishops. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, led the service to consecrate Lane, which was briefly interrupted by a man shouting, "No, not in the bible." Sentamu simply moved on. Dozens of bishops gathered around Lane, laying on hands and offering a sign of solidarity. Lane was ordained in 1994, one of the first women to become a Church of England priest. Her husband is also an Anglican priest. The 80 million-strong global Anglican Communion, whose members range from conservative evangelicals to supporters of gay marriage, has long been divided on the role of women in church leadership. The Church of England's national assembly, the General Synod, voted for the measure in July after a previous attempt two years earlier had failed.
