There're a lot of false facts about animals and we're getting to the bottom of the common misconceptions in this video. I've googled popular animals myths to debunk them for you. Can blue whales swallow a car? What do you think is the largest thing a blue whale can swallow? We're talking about the biggest animal in the word to have ever lived on our planet. It can grow to up to 100 feet. So it's possible to imagine a blue whale swallowing something big like a car. But can it really? Its throat can take the size of a small salad plate; - Camels can survive even when drinking water only every 8 to 10 days, but not because they have a secret stash on their back. It's because, when they have a chance to drink, they will swallow 50 gallons of water at one sitting; - It's a myth that anteaters vacuum ants using their noses. Anteaters have very long tongues; - Another misconception states that owls can spin their heads, neither more nor less than 360 degrees. Their head-spinning does have its limit - 270 degrees in one direction; - If you touch a butterfly's wings, the animal won't lose its ability to fly. It will survive - despite the common myth that says the opposite. Butterfly's wings have scales; - Wolves don't howl at the Moon. They typically howl at night, true, but because that's the period of time when they're most active; - Giraffes sleep about 4 and a half hours daily. It's not that unusual for animal species that are most active during daylight; - Many people believe moles are blind. These small, burrowing mammals actually CAN see. It's just their vision is really poor and only adapted to recognize the light; - Chipmunks, bats, turtles, snakes - they all hibernate during the winter, which saves them energy for other seasons when they get more active and are capable of getting more food; - Earwigs prefer to spend their time in dark, moist places such as under tree bark or in soil. When it comes to finding diamonds in the ocean, you probably think about sunken treasures that went down with pirate ships and Spanish galleons. Maybe you’d like to find the Flor de la Mar, which sank in 1511 and took with it 200 chests of treasure, including diamonds the size of your fist! But there are lots of diamonds at the bottom of the sea that didn’t go down with a ship. How did they get there? Well, natural diamonds come from the Earth’s mantle, 100 miles or more beneath our planet’s surface. If you could hop in your car and drive that distance, it’d take you 2 hours at highway speeds! SUMMARY: - If the lava spews up from a deep enough layer (like 100 miles down), then diamonds shoot out! - Volcanos erupt when the tectonic plates beneath them move around. This releases all kinds of hot stuff underneath. - A subduction zone is a place where huge tectonic plates shift around underwater. - But how do diamond-hunters find subduction zones all the way at the bottom of the ocean? Good question because it’s not easy, even for scientists! - You can make a diamond from anything with carbon in it. Just gotta add heat and pressure. - While nowhere near as pretty as natural diamonds, these human-made, or “industrial” diamonds have plenty of uses. - From the drills that your dentist uses on your teeth to the saws that cut through trees and metal, all sorts of blades are made with industrial diamonds. - Diamonds are also great conductors of heat, and they can withstand high temperatures. - Some facial exfoliators even have ground-up diamonds in them! - The river’s current carries sediment downstream. No matter what you call it, public restrooms aren’t always the most pleasant experience; the germs, unspoken etiquette…no one likes to talk about it, it’s can be a tender subject, but, Brightsider, today’s your lucky day! But these aren’t always an option. If you must put your drink or mug on the sink, put clean paper towels down first. - Rub the soap on top of your hands and between your fingers. Don’t forget to get under those nails! You should wash for at least twenty seconds. Rinse your hands completely and dry with a clean towel. - Make sure your hand sanitizer is at least 60% alcohol. Know that hand sanitizers don’t get rid of all types of germs. - If you’re out and you bump into someone you know in the bathroom, your first instinct might be to shake their hand or touch them with a greeting. Resist the temptation. - Keep the restroom a quiet place. Some of us have to concentrate. - Experts say that chatting at the sink while washing your hands is a no-no. They say that you should just focus on getting your hands clean and avoid eye contact. - Whenever possible, don’t pick the stall right next to somebody. Put a stall or two between you if the restroom isn’t crowded. - Say you’re standing in front of a one-person bathroom and you aren’t sure if there’s anyone inside. - It’s a little-known fact, but many public restrooms are equipped with a fan, a.k.a an exhaust fan. It will circulate the air in the bathroom, in case you aren’t able to leave it smelling fresh as a daisy. For over three years we have been working on developing an Interceptor project in the Rio Motagua basin in Guatemala, which suffers yearly trash tsunamis, devastating the environment. Subscribe to stay updated: 🤍 Geographic and municipal conditions mean an estimated 20,000 tonnes of plastic currently flows through the Rio Motagua into the Caribbean Sea on an annual basis. Based on this number, this one river alone is responsible for an estimated 2% of global plastic emissions into the oceans. In May, we trialed our Interceptor Trashfence, aiming to intercept up to 20M kg of plastic flowing through the Rio Motagua into the Caribbean Sea each year. The pilot phase is completed, we’ve disassembled the Trashfence, and we’ll study the learnings from this exciting trial.
